 “SAKHAVTOMAT”, Ltd. built the first Sugar Beet Processing Division in India.

Beginning from the moment of its establishment and up today, “SAKHAVTOMAT”, Ltd. (Kharkov, Ukraine) has been developing stage by stage from a supplier of spare parts and equipment for sugar mills to the organization capable to perform contracts for delivery of bulky equipment from Ukraine and European Union countries to sugar mills of CIS countries, Asia and other countries of the world, as well as to carry out erection and commissioning works.

Now SAKHAVTOMAT delivers equipment for sugar industry and performs its installation at the mills of CIS and Asian countries. A high qualified personnel and up-to-date equipment of the company make it possible to provide a high level of work performance. Nowadays 125 qualified professionals with huge experience work at the company.

It is due to its reputation of a stable and reliable partner that SAKHAVTOMAT takes part in large international projects, such as erection of the first sugar beet processing division at sugar mill in India.

One year ago in Athani, Karnataka State, India, there was put into operation the first sugar beet processing division with capacity of 2.5-3 thou. t of beet per day at a mill for processing sugar cane belonging to SHREE RENUKA SUGARS, the largest sugar manufacturer of India.

Installed equipment by SAKHAVTOMAT. Beginning of equipment erection.

Thanks to a complicated work carried out by PERRYVIDEX (USA), DE SMET (Belgium), SAKHAVTOMAT (Kharkov, Ukraine), the sugar beet processing division of Ivanopol sugar mill has obtained a second life. Some time ago Ivanopol sugar mill was prepared to liquidation by its owner.

The contract for delivery of used equipment from Ukraine to India was concluded by American company PERRYVIDEX, the project was developed by Belgian company DE SMET, and work on dismounting of the equipment at Ivanopol sugar mill, Zhitomir Region, its repair, delivery to the port of shipment and further installation in the territory of India was performed by SAKHAVTOMAT.

This project was described by Aleksandr Anatolyevich Yarovoy, Director of SAKHAVTOMAT in his interview to “Sugar of Ukraine” Magazine.

 - Aleksandr Anatolyevich, which was the start of the project?

At the end of 2008 we received a proposal from Lev Aronovich Dragobetsky, Chief of Sugar Department of PERRYVIDEX, to consider the possibility of search for sugar beet processing equipment, to be possibly shipped to India. Of course, this proposal might seem a fantastic one if it had not been for a high world authority of PERRYVIDEX, in general and that of Lev Dragobetsky in particular. So in February of 2009 representatives of PERRYVIDEX, DE SMET and SAKHAVTOMAT met with managers of SHREE RENUKA SUGARS in the central office of RENUKA in Mumbai. These negotiations resulted in development of the algorithm for further work and schedule of work performance. One of our leading engineers, Anatoliy Ivanovich Demchenko, told to Indian colleagues about technology of obtaining different products from sugar beet, and about the equipment to be used for this purpose, about its specifications. RENUKA employees understood that the task is not a simple one, and this may be solved only in cooperation with professionals.

- India makes sugar from sugar cane. Where then will they get sugar beet from?

We also were surprised. But lately In India are seriously interested in growing sugar beet. The appropriate sugar beet seeds were specially selected for Indian agroclimatic conditions. We were shown sugar beet roots grown from these seeds – they were worth to look at.

- What was the level of work complexity?

You may judge on complexity of the performed work basing on the fact that total weight of dismounted equipment was more than 500 t, its packing required 360 m3 of timber. SAKHAVTOMAT dismounted, overhauled, painted with antirust paint, packed in wooden cases for RENUKA SUGARS by order of PERRYVIDEX the following equipment:

  1. Beet diffuser ДЦ-10;
  2. Beet washer Ш1-ПМД-3 with rinsers and water separators;
  3. Pumps relating to beet washer and diffusion;
  4. Catchers for stones and catchers for straw and beet tops;
  5. Beet slicers with 12 frames.

We managed to perform all the works due to our high-qualified specialists. The most complicated dismounting and repair works, as well as those on packing and shipment of cargoes to the port were supervised by Vladimir Anatolyevich Kobzar. The works on election in India were led Yuriy Grigoryevich Zheltyakov. And the setting-up and commissioning works were supervised by Grigoriy Mefodyevich Kosenko.

-What was the condition of Ivanopol sugar mill during the dismounting time?

Dismounting of the mill was started in August of 2009 when SAKHAVTOMAT bought from the company engaged in dismounting some pieces of equipment, that is, the complete sugar-beet procession division. In December of 2009 a team of 40 erectors, welders and fitters supervised by Vladimir Anatolyevich Kobzar, Deputy Director of SAKHAVTOMAT, began dismounting of beet diffuser ДЦ-10, beet washer Ш1-ПМД-3, catchers for stones, catchers for straw and beet tops, pumps, etc. On the mill’s site, there was organized overhaul of the dismounted equipment. We had to modify all the electrical equipment. This was due to the fact that Indian industrial electrical network in India is designed for 415 V, and Ukrainian one – for 380 V, so all the equipment was rebuilt for the Indian standard voltage. We employed conveyance agents who provided delivery of equipment from Ivanpol to the port, and from there to India by sea. On the site, in Ivanpol, we packed the equipment in wooden cases. We manufactured the cases by ourselves. You may judge on the work performed if manufacture of the cases required 360 m3of high-quality timber, the case dimensions being 3 x 3 x 6 m. In Ivanpol, all the set of equipment having metal content of more than 450 t was customs cleared and dispatched to the port.

 -What were the impressions of the members of the Ukrainian team from their work in India?

For work performance in India we sent 12 our best specialists headed byYuriy Zheltyakov. What do you think which impression may have the people which for the first time arrived in so an exotic country? During the first month, it was very interesting but then was a usual working process. More than 60 Indians were assigned to help our people. The work was performed for 24 hours. Really difficult work was made by Aleksey Alekseyevich Savchenko, my Deputy in Charge of Foreign Economical Relations who then worked as an interpreter, maintaining on a shift basis with another interpreter language communication with Indian specialists, Indian and Belgian colleagues.

The work began in at the beginning of December 2010 and completed in the middle of March 2011. This means that in record-breaking period, there were installed all the steel structures for equipment, the equipment itself, laid all the cable and pipe lines. After erection, the setting-up team headed by Grigoriy Mefodyevich Kosenko proceeded with setting up the equipment, and the sector was successfully put into operation at the end of April 2011. Setting up the electrical equipment was not a simple task but Valentin Petrovich Kolesnik successfully coped with the assigned task.

Of course, there also were met some difficulties: other culture, other approaches to work performance, a horrid heat. But primarily the main difficulty consisted in poor qualification of Indian erectors. I state with the full responsibility, the sector could not be built so quick without our specialists.

-With which indices, did the Indian sugar mill complete the season with the use of the installed equipment?

In principle, the first experimental 15000 t naturally were processed with some problems but generally we can say that there were obtained good results, that is, dry substance concentration of 18-19% for average digestion of 16%.

-How do you assess the prospects of such projects?

This country has promising prospects for beet sugar production, and we have a huge experience, technologies and equipment, high-qualified specialists, and so if Indians decide to further develop growing sugar beet, they naturally will cooperate with us. We showed a very high level of work! Besides, our enterprises which, for some reason, turned out unnecessary for Ukraine may obtain a second life. Of course, it is much simpler to turn the enterprise with serviceable equipment which is still able to serve people into usual metal slabs. In my opinion, if some enterprise has been already prepared for liquidation, it is much better to disassemble its equipment, and this is additional work places and additional tax proceeds.

Currently SAKHAVTOMAT is building a raw-sugar processing facility in Uzbekistan with the processing capacity 1000 TPD and scheduled output of the white sugar 900 TPD.

            -What was the condition of Ivanopol sugar mill during the dismounting time?

            Any industrial enterprise subjected to dismounting operations has a rather miserable appearance, An enterprise as a whole comprises a living organism. Under knife, it begins to cry and die….

Aleksey Savchenko,

Deputy Director in Charge of Foreign Economical Relations, conducts technical negotiations

            The time scheduled for dismounting, overhaul and packing was very short. Our people worked in winter at a temperature of -25°C but performed their work with a high quality.

            -Why did you choose Ivanopol sugar mill? What were the criteria of your choice?

            Inanopol sugar mill had not been working for about 5-6 years, and then its owner took a decision on its liquidation. This meant that the mill had to be cut to scrap metal. Unfortunately, the last decades showed, that in our country, the cases when practically serviceable equipment is sent for remelting are not rare. This mill was chosen for the

reason that the representatives of DE SMET (Belgium) being the project developer liked the equipment of this enterprise. It was they who proposed PERRYVIDEX (USA) to find the sugar beet processing equipment. We had long-standing business and friendly relations with PERRYVIDEX, and particularly with Lev Dragobetsky, Chief of its Sugar Department, so we obtained a proposal on search for equipment. SAKHAVTOMAT managed to solve the assigned task triumphantly. Many times the representatives of PERRYVIDEX and DE SMET arrived to conduct inspection of work performance and always remained satisfied with the results they saw.
